About Me
An enthusiastic artist as a child, I put the practice aside when I chose to get a BA in English, and worked as a writer and editor for many years (most notably, I wrote four books on Wicca/NeoPaganism as "Jennifer Hunter.") In 2007, at age 36, I attended a collaging workshop on a lark, and I've been making up for lost time ever since. In 2018, I left my most recent career after 15 years as a professional organizer due to the severity of my ME/CFS, and I now spend most of my time managing my household, but I try to squeeze in art when I can. I have exhibited in many open studios and shows in the Boston area, including almost a decade in West Medford Open Studios. I'm a member of the Medford Arts Center, Inc (MACI) and served on its board for two years.
Most of my work has been in collage and assemblage with found materials. I enjoy the challenge of working within limitations, and I also love transforming turning potential landfill into something beautiful. The papers come from magazines, calendars, old books and letters, anything that catches my attention. I like found objects in wood, glass, metal, and occasionally plastic, especially if they’re broken, worn, or patina-ed in some way. Of course free stuff is best, but I’m willing to spend a little money if I find something awesome at a thrift shop or antique show (Brimfield is the best!). Each piece grows organically. I start with one or two elements, and add more as feels necessary. Sometimes I stop almost right away; sometimes the piece becomes very complex. The final result often manages to be both a surprise and strangely familiar at the same time.
More recently, I have been doing more traditional drawing and painting, inspired by the TV shows "Good Omens" (Amazon Prime) and "Our Flag Means Death" (Max). I hope to get better at depicting figures and portraits so I can make more fan art.
I live in Medford, Massachusetts with my husband Andrew and daughter Ilana (who is also an artist). I came out as transmasculine in 2023. Besides art, some of my other passions include musicians Kate Bush and Vienna Teng, planting native plants and killing invasives, snorkeling, eating, improv theater games, social justice (especially fat activism), and self-improvement.
